Tasting notes
An elegant, fruit-driven red that reflects the cool climate of Hokkaido. Zweigelt, a variety little known outside a handful of regions, shows red and black fruit, gentle spice, and soft tannins here, with a fresh, aromatic character shaped by the terroir it’s grown in.
Food pairing
Roast pork, teriyaki dishes, grilled root vegetables (its Hokkaido character often carries a burdock-like note), charcuterie, and other every day, moderately rich dishes that pair well with a lighter-bodied red.
Winemaking
Zweigelt was developed in Austria in the early 1900s by Dr. Fritz Zweigelt, who crossed the St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch varieties to create an early-ripening, generously yielding grape with excellent fruit, structure, color, and aroma. Coco Farm sources its Zweigelt from contract growers Nakagawa Farm and Konishi Farm in the Nobori district of Yoichi, Hokkaido. Winemaker Bruce Gutlove ferments the grapes with wild yeast at the 10R Winery in Iwamizawa, Hokkaido, taking advantage of Zweigelt’s cold-hardiness to produce a deep, high-quality red even in Japan’s cooler wine regions.
